carribean culture

Earth’s Song is nestled in the quiet, dense jungle - and a quick drive, or exhilarating bike ride, to the booming, diverse community of Puerto Viejo.

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is all about chill vibes and tropical adventures, and the town of Puerto Viejo gives visitors the opportunity to experience a little bit of everything. Picture palm-fringed beaches backed by rainforests with monkeys and sloths watching you swim in turquoise waters – it's pure paradise. But it's not just about the scenery; Puerto Viejo has this amazing mix of Afro-Caribbean and indigenous cultures that you can feel in the music, art, and food scene. Imagine lively reggae beats, streets lined with local’s art, and delicious seafood served up in beachside cafes. Plus, the community here is super diverse with expats from Europe, Australia, Canada, and other Central American countries since the pandemic, and there are plenty of hostels hosting digital nomads from around the world. The town has a unique international vibe that blends seamlessly with the local culture. Whether you're catching waves surfing, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, or relaxing in a hammock with a cold drink, Puerto Viejo is the place to soak in that laid-back Caribbean vibe.

Just a five minute bike ride from the sanctuary, Manzanillo Beach is prized for its pristine, undeveloped beauty. Nestled against lush rainforest, it offers a serene escape with excellent snorkeling in clear waters abundant with marine life. Ideal for nature enthusiasts seeking a quieter beach experience, Manzanillo's unspoiled charm and tranquil ambiance set it apart from more touristy destinations. The area’s most caring surf instructors, kayak tour guides, dolphin watching guides and more availaible during stay!

Other beaches nearby -

Cocles beach - community gatherings, surf schools, beach gym

Punta Uva - kayak rentals, surf teachers, hiking spots

Playa Negra/Black Beach - features black, magnetic sand

Dining - taste many cultures within the small community

Just a five minute walk to the sanctuary, is our favorite brunch spot - Tambie’s an Argentina Bakery & Cafe where the owners greet you with much love, and have the town’s BEST brunch and artesian bakery treats to go. Along the beach coast in Manzanillo, there are multiple Afro-Caribbean and Costa Rican restaurants. Our two favorites: Cool & Calm - they feature live raggae music every Sunday and Mista Cook- insanely tasty afro-carribean food owned and operated by a local family. Escaping quiet Manzanillo for lively Puerto Viejo? You’ll have ample options from locals, Irish pubs, smoothie shops to sushi restaurants and beach side food trucks. There is something for everyone.

experience the land, support the locals

There are many ways to support the local community - eating at family owned restaurants (called Soda’s here :) shopping at Puerto Viejo’s Saturday morning market and purchasing arts from street vendors. If you’re interested in diving a bit deeper, we’d appreciate you to consider learning about this team that is providing free, preventative holistic health services and workshops to the indigenous people of Talamanca - many of which live below the countries poverty line.
